Community Outreach

Enhancing STEM (Science, Techology, Engineering and Math) education in our community

Science is an important component of a 21st-century education—and the earlier it begins, the better.

We offer a number of programs designed to help K–12 teachers interested in exploring science with their students. We are happy to give presentations in area classrooms, host field trips to our facilities, and supplement educator resources in any way that we can. Students are even welcome to attend departmental colloquia!

In addition, we host opportunities for students to further their science education through summer learning experiences, coursework, and contests and competitions.

Competitions and conferences

We offer subject-specific programs and competitions throughout the academic year.

Computer Science Day—this annual event features a programming competition as well as student panels that illustrate what life is like as a computer science student. Winners get a scholarship.
High School Math Contest—this contest requires students to solve a series of complicated math problems. Winners get cash prizes and scholarships to the School of Science.
International Brain Bee—much like a spelling bee, students in this event answer questions about the brain and nervous system until a single student remains. The winner gets a scholarship.
Psychology Day—this event provides a sneak peek at what it’s like to be a psychology student.

College courses and credit for high school students

If you’re an advanced student ready for more challenging science classes, you can take advantage of two unique programs that let you take classes at the School of Science—and even get college credit.

SPAN

SPAN offers motivated high school students like you the chance to immerse themselves in campus life and take classes not offered at their schools.

The program offers six accelerated immersion programs that allow you to focus on the areas that are of most interest to you.

Project Lead the Way

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) gives high school students the opportunity to take classes in biomedical science that can later be used as college credit.

It also offers teacher training for K–12 science teachers.

Summer education opportunities

During the summer months, we offer a number of programs that provide on-campus experiences and fuel your passion for science.

Project SEED American Chemical Society Summer Internship at IUPUI—this program brings students like you into chemistry labs across campus for a paid, full-time research internship.
IU Simon Cancer Center Summer Research Program—this is an eight-week program that pairs historically underrepresented students with a faculty mentor for a full-time research internship.
Summer Research Experience in the Department of Physics—this is an intensive six-week summer research program open to high school juniors and seniors. Selected students are paired with faculty mentors, and participate in cutting-edge research projects.
